Dreams of Peace on Hold: Talks at Columbia between the Koreas End

Record Photo by Joe Pineiro

Hopes for peace on the divided Korean peninsula are reflected in signs carried by Korean students who gathered outside the International Affairs Building last Thursday to demonstrate support for talks among diplomats of North and South Korea, the United States and China. But the preliminary discussions to set an agenda for formal talks to forge a permanent peace agreement between the two Koreas broke down on Friday. Washington blamed North Korea for the failure, saying the communist government persisted with demands linking the talks to food aid and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from South Korea. No further talks are scheduled. The School of International and Public Affairs hosted the delegates in the Kellogg Conference Center for last week's meeting and a session in August.
