Honoring Professor Paxton
eading international historians of Vichy France gathered at Columbia's Maison Francaise last Friday and Saturday for a conference honoring Mellon Professor of the Social Sciences Robert Paxton, above at right, whose book, Vichy France: Old Guard and New Order, 25 years ago challenged the myth of French resistance under Nazi occupation. In remarks welcoming the conference participants, President George Rupp, shown in conversation with Paxton, lauded the historian as an "extraordinary teacher and scholar" whose "passion for truth" had a profound influence on modern France. Although he retired from the faculty in June, Paxton is teaching a history course this semester.
