requently, even the most highly touted recruit in college athletics requires at least a year to mature into his or her game at the Division I level.
Steve Millerman did not.
The men's tennis first-year made an immediate impact on East Coast collegiate tennis by breezing through his five matches to become the singles champion at the Princeton Invitational Sept. 27-29.
Millerman not only defeated opponents from three of the tougher teams in the regionPenn, Princeton and Miamibut won each of his matches in straight sets, including the Hurricanes' No. 1 player, 6-2, 7-6 (7) in the final.
"As a freshman, to win [the tournament] is unbelievable," head coach Bid Goswami explained. "I always thought Steve was a very mature player, but college is a very different game, so I didn't know what to expect. He played up to the level of his opponent every match."
Millerman was seeded eighth in the field of 32 players.
The Lions completed a sweep of the Invitational's titles when the tandem of junior Scott Watnik and sophomore Salil Seshadri won the doubles title. The pair defeated the No. 1 duo from Princeton, 8-5, in the finals.
"We've got a very young team. I'm very happy with them; they're very coachable," Goswami noted.
