Students Sought to Coach Kids Teams

Columbia students are invited to become local sports team coaches through Nike Inc.'s "Participate in the Lives of America's Youth Corps" (PLAY Corps) program.

Last year, the program's first, 180 students at 25 universities coached basketball, cheerleading, football, ice hockey, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and track to underserved kids ages 8-13.

The Beaverton, Ore., firm decided that budget cuts had forced elementary and middle schools and community organizations to cut back on sports programs, so it decided to create a program to support community organizations in their attempts to offer team and individual sports to local kids.

To participate in the PLAY Corps program, students fill out an application (the deadline for spring and summer sports is Jan. 1) and identify a local organization—anything from the city's Parks and Recreation department and the Children's Aid Society to the Special Olympics—that can use them to coach for 80 to 100 hours a year.

For information, call PLAY Corps at 503-671-2213, or send email to: PLAYCORPS@nike.com.
