Barnard Names 4 New Trustees

The Board of Trustees of Barnard College has elected four new members from New York's business and financial community, Barnard President Judith R. Shapiro has announced.

  They are: Abby A. Gilmore, BC'67, corporate executive; Laird Grant, BC'67, investment firm executive; Sally Hernandez-Piñero, a former New York City official and a lawyer specializing in public finance projects, and Laura Sloate, BC'66, investment firm principal. They will serve five- year terms.

  • Gilmore is president and chief executive of Covington Industries Inc., a fabric supplier to the home furnishing industry. Previously, she served as vice president and general counsel at Covington Fabrics. Prior to that, she was an associate at the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. She is also the coauthor of several publications on sex discrimination and its effect on educational achievement. Gilmore has a B.A. in history from Barnard, an M.A. from Teachers College, and a J.D. from Yeshiva University.

  • Grant is president, chief executive officer and chief investment officer of Rockefeller & Co., a financial services firm that manages over $4 billion for families, endowments and foundations. She previously headed the Personal Investment Division of U.S. Trust Company, where she managed client assets for 17 years. She has a B.A. in Russian studies from Barnard, and was the recipient of the College's Katherine Reeve Girard Prize.

  • Hernandez-Piñero is of counsel at the New York law firm of Kalkines, Arky, Zall & Bernstein, where she serves the firm's tax-exempt and corporate clients involved in public finance, housing, and economic development projects. Previously she held senior positions in New York City government, including deputy mayor for Finance and Economic Development, chairwoman of the New York City Housing Authority, commissioner of the Financial Services Corp. of New York City, and deputy borough president of Manhattan.

      Hernandez-Piñero received a B.A. in English and Spanish from Wesleyan in 1974, and a J.D. from N.Y.U. in 1977.

  • Sloate is chair, chief investment officer and director of research at Sloate, Weisman, Murray & Co., a New York-based money management firm she cofounded in 1974. The company manages over $1 billion. Sloate entered the mutual fund market in 1995 when she became chief portfolio manager of the Strong Value Fund, one of several in the family of the Milwaukee-based Strong Funds. Sloate received a B.A. in medieval history from Barnard and an M.A. in modern European history from Columbia.
