51st Annual CCS Drive Underway
anners have gone up around College Walk, signaling that the 51st annual appeal of Columbia Community Service has begun.
All Columbia employees are encouraged to join the effort to raise funds for more than 40 community groups and human service agencies in the neighborhoods near the Morningside Heights campus and Harlem Hospital. Last year CCS raised more than $220,000, a record.
Leading this year's campaign will be cochairs Donald Hood, professor of psychology, and Colleen Crooker, vice president for human resources. Joining them are Arthur Levine, president of Teachers College, and Judith Shapiro, president of Barnard College. They will direct a cadre of campus volunteers.
President George Rupp, in announcing this year's effort, notes that recent cuts in federal, state and local social programs have taken their toll. "It is therefore especially critical that local organizations dedicated to the common good and to helping those least able to help themselves receive our support at this time," he said.
"Giving to Columbia Community Service/United Way is a wonderful way to support the people in our community," said Hood.
No gift dollars go for administrative expenses. Donations may be earmarked for CCS, the United Way, or half for each. And this year, for the first time, donors may indicate a service area of their choice. And, once again, CCS will hold a donors' raffle. Employees will shortly receive a mailing where they may make their donations, either as a payroll deduction or a one-time gift. For information, contact CCS at 2960 Broadway, Mailcode 5757, Columbia University, New York, N.Y. 10027 or at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/annualappeal/.
