he Institute for Research in African-American Studies and the President's Office sponsored a conversation on race and race relations, which drew about 125 academics, journalists and community members to Low Rotunda on Oct. 7.
Four newly-appointed faculty in African-American studies joined History Professor and Institute Director Manning Marable (center) for the discussion, a response to President Clinton's call for broader understanding and reconciliation between blacks and whites.
From left: Lee Baker, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and African-American Studies; Gina Dent, Assistant Professor of English and Comparative Literature and Research Fellow in African-American Studies; Professor Marable; Mary Patillo, Assistant Professor of Sociology and African-American Studies; and Michael Eric Dyson, Distinguished Visiting Professor of African-American Studies. The four new appointments create a core faculty for courses on African-American studies through the Institute.
