Columbia in the News

  • On page one of the Real Estate section of the Oct. 26 New York Times was a story about the three exhibits at Columbia marking the 100th anniversary of the Morningside Heights campus. Janet Parks, co-curator of the exhibit in Wallach Art Gallery, is quoted as saying that the vibrations of the New York Central railroad near Columbia's campus at Madison Ave. and 49th St. was one factor in the University's removal to Morningside Heights in 1897.

  • President George Rupp is quoted in a Oct. 27 Washington Post story on student loans as reporting that Columbia has decided to "eschew direct loans" to students, given the federal program's uncertain future.

  • Under the headline "Chinese Tycoon Gives Columbia $26 Million," The New York Times reported Oct. 1 on a gift from Z. Y. Fu that will rename Columbia's engineering school as the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. The story, written by Karen W. Arenson, says Columbia President George Rupp has actively courted Asian givers since he became president in 1993. "I thought it was important that Columbia make more of its very high international profile, particularly in Asia. To send a signal, I decided to make a trip to Asia."
