ore than 100 students attended an orientation on intersession and summer Congressional internships on Monday evening, Oct. 27, sponsored by the Office of Public Affairs.
Details of the internship program for students from Columbia, Barnard and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science were presented in Wien Lounge by Vice President for Public Affairs Alan J. Stone, a longtime legislative aide and a former White House speech writer in the Clinton Administration, and Assistant Vice President and Director of Federal Relations Ellen S. Smith.
During the 1996-97 academic year, more than 20 students were placed either in district offices during intersession or in district and Washington, D.C., offices during the summer.
Additional information about the student Congressional internships can be obtained from the Office of Public Affairs in Room 301 Low or by contacting Graduate Research Assistant Caroline Washburn at 854-7009.
In other matters, controversy over his affirmative action positions has temporarily delayed the appointment of Columbia Law graduate Bill Lann Lee as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. At the same time the House Judiciary Committee defeated a Charles Canady (R.-Fla.) bill 17-9 that would eliminate affirmative action in Federal hiring and contracting.
Once the bill funding the Education Department and the Department of Health and Human Services is passed, Pell grants will rise $300 to $3,000. In addition, NIH will receive a 7.1 percent increase over fiscal year 1997.
