Keeping Watch Over the Archives

Record Photo by Joe Pineiro.
During a recent gathering at Columbia of representatives from the world's premier manuscript collections, some attendees shared a light moment: Elaine Sloan, vice president for information and University librarian; Richard Ekman, secretary of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; Jean Ashton, director of the Rare Book and Manuscript Library, and Consuelo Dutschke, curator of medieval and renaissance manuscripts at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library. They met to begin establishing standards for the online cataloging and electronic dissemination of centuries-old European manuscripts. The Mellon Foundation is the major supporter of the effort to digitize medieval manuscripts.
