erb Estrin, owner of Mama Joy's delicatessen, is giving Columbia College, on behalf of his late brother, Martin, funding for five scholarships yearly for five years.
After his brother died last year, Estrin became sole owner of the popular Columbia deli on Broadway, between W. 113th and 114th Sts.
The store, which has served thousands of Columbia students and faculty over the past 42 years, was founded by their mother, Lillian, who also died last year.
Herb Estrin, as co-trustee of Martin's estate, decided "it was time to give something back to Columbia and Morningside Heights." The gift will fund five scholarships yearly for residents of Manhattan for the next five years.
Estrin and his wife Rose were recently honored at a ceremony in the office of Provost Jonathan R. Cole.
"The gift from Mama Joy's is a wonderful example of generosity from people of modest means who have served our faculty and students so faithfully for so long. And to earmark the scholarship funds for local residents is to ensure that students of modest means will be able to afford to attend Columbia," said Cole.
Estrin, who is co-owner of University Food Market diagonally across Broadway, also has donated funds for Columbia's Double Discovery Center and Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.
