Core Awards to Go to Hovde, Gray

Carl Hovde and Wallace Gray, professors emeriti of English, are to share the fifth annual Award for Distinguished Service to the Core Curriculum in a ceremony in the President's Room of Faculty House on Thurs., Nov. 20.

  The proceedings, which will begin at 3:30 P.M., are co-hosted by Columbia College Dean Austin E. Quigley, Vice President for Arts and Sciences David Cohen and Wm. Theodore de Bary, director of the Heyman Center for the Humanities.

  Hovde, CC'50, joined Columbia's English department in 1960, soon becoming a full professor. He was dean of Columbia College from 1968 to 1972. Over the years he has taught Literature Humanities and for five years was chair of the Humanities staff. Since his retirement in 1995 he has served as chair of the Friends of the Heyman Center and also is a member of the Society of Senior Scholars. He has also received the Mark Van Doren Award and the Lionel Trilling Award.

  Gray received his Ph.D. from Columbia in 1958. He joined the English department in 1953 and retired in 1994. He continues to teach Literature Humanities as a member of the Society of Senior Scholars, and is the teacher with the longest consecutive service in the course. He also served as assistant dean of students in Columbia College and was director of freshmen composition. He also has won the Mark Van Doren Award.

  The awards ceremony is free and open to all Columbians.
