John Bateman, 83, Former Player
n Jan. 1, former Columbia football player and assistant coach John Bateman died in New London, N.H. at the age of 83.
Bateman was a fine guard at Columbia, and was voted co-captain of the 1937 Lions. He graduated from Columbia College in 1938. Bateman obtained his master's degree from Columbia in 1939. He returned after the war and became an assistant coach on Lou Little's staff, earning his doctorate in education from Teachers College in 1954. He was named head coach at Rutgers following the 1959 season. Bateman led them to an 81 record in 1960 and to a perfect 90 in 1961, for which he was named Coach of the Year.
He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife, Anita; a sister; three sons; seven grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
