Discussing the Empowerment Zone

Record Photo by Eileen Barroso.
Bernadette Marjoram, executive director of London’s Brixton Challenge, above, spoke to community and Columbia leaders at a breakfast in the Low Faculty Room last week. Her program in London is quite similar to the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone. The event was co-sponsored by the Office of Public Affairs and the Daily News. Participating on the panel were Delbert Spurlock, associate publisher, the Daily News; Larry Dais, Columbia assistant vice president and director of community relations; E.R. Shipp, the Daily News columnist and an assistant professor of journalism at Columbia; Karen Phillips, Abyssinian Development Corp., and Trevor Phillips, columnist, The Independent (U.K.). Welcoming the visitors was Columbia’s Vice President for Public Affairs Alan J. Stone.
