orty Columbia alumni, who have excelled in the new media industry, participated in last weeks Internet Career Conference, organized by the Center for Career Services. Keynote speaker Alan Meckler, above, chairman and CEO of Mecklermedia, who holds a B.A. from Columbia College and a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, discussed general trends, predicting among other things that by the year 2001, 90 percent of American homes will be connected to the Internet with the number of users world wide growing from 75 million to 400 million over the next 10 years. Below, a panel of alumni, including more recent grads, from left: Adam Tractenberg, CC 97; Jeffrey Gale, CC 96, and Marian Wright, CC 90, discussed their roles in newly established new media companies, inlcuding one that was started as a student business. One of the conferences main themes was the opportunities available for liberal arts majors in the content development area of new media.
