Wei Honored
ei Jingsheng, Chinas most prominent political exile and a visiting scholar at Columbias School of International and Public Affairs, has received the 1998 Democracy Award of the National Endowment for Democracy. The award was presented to Wei in Washington, D.C. Feb. 4 by Representative Nancy Pelosi (D.Ca.). The co-recipient was Wang Dan, the foremost student leader of the 1989 pro-democracy movement who remains a political prisoner in China.
Together, the men represent two generations of the post-Mao democracy movement in Chinathe generation of the Democracy Wall movement of 197879, of which Wei was a preeminent figure, and the generation of the Tiananmen Square demonstrations of 1989.
