College Students to Sponsor a Week of Community Outreach
eeking to build on an increasing spirit of cooperation and friendship between Columbia and the surrounding communities, Columbia Community Outreach, an undergraduate student group led by two College juniors, will sponsor a week-long series of community-service related events in early April, capped by a service day on Sat., Apr. 4.
We are looking to involve all constituencies of the University and community residents in giving something to the community during this period, said Charles Leykum, CC 99, who, along with classmate Allan Ng, has organized a weeks worth of events. They are backed by more than 100 student volunteers and have received funding from the Columbia College, Barnard and Engineering Student Councils, the Columbia and Barnard offices of student activities and the Presidents and Provosts Initiative Fund. They are also seeking support from various local residents organizations and Community Board Nine.
Among the projects the students hope to tackle are renovating local public schools, mural paintings, park cleanups and street cleanups.
We hope to perform service in the community, celebrate Columbia by uniting the campus in a cooperative effort, raise funds for Community Impact and the Double Discovery Center and promote awareness for service programs and initiatives, said Leykum.
A pre-registration period will be held on campus during the week of Mar. 2-12. Student organizations and individuals will be encouraged to register. For more information, call Leykum at 854-1304.
