ast year, she was valedictorian and president of her high school’s senior class. This year she is the leading scorer and rebounder for Columbia women’s basketball. Shawnee Pickney, a Los Angeles native, says: “I knew on my recruiting trip that Columbia was the place for me.” She chose Columbia because of the strong academics and the chance to play Division I basketball. A high school stand-out in L.A., her team won the city championship, and she was named to the All-City First Team. After basketball, Pickney would like to work with children in community service. Her life goals have also switched; rather than looking forward to becoming a district attorney, she now would like to go into a law practice dealing with race relations and children. She is hoping for a summer internship with the Children’s Legal Defense Fund.
