Chang

Timothy A. Pedley has been named chairman of the department of neurology, succeeding Lewis P. Rowland, who had served as chairman since 1973. Pedley joined Columbia in 1979 following appointments at Stanford’s School of Medicine and the Maudsley Hospital and Institute of Psychiatry in London.

  As a specialist in epilepsy, Pedley has overseen important research into the causes and treatment of epilepsy, the third most common neurological disorder after stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. Under his direction, Columbia’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center has shed new light on every aspect of the disease, from its molecular level to its social impact. Pedley was listed in American Health’s March 1996 cover story “The Nation’s Top M.D.’s—Chosen by Their Colleagues.”

Novak

  Shih-Fu Chang, associate professor of electrical engineering, has won a prestigious Young Investigator grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) for his research into advanced visual search techniques on the Internet.

  This extremely competitive program is open to academic researchers who have earned a Ph.D. not more than five years before the award.

  Barbara Novak, the Helen Goodhart Altschul Professor of Art History at Barnard, has received the Distinguished Teaching of Art History Award from the College Art Association. During her 40-year career, Novak has taught and been a mentor to many of today’s leading art historians.

Friedman

  A 1951 Barnard graduate, Novak joined its faculty in 1958, a year after she received her Ph.D from Harvard. The award was presented at the CAA’s 86th annual convocation in Toronto on Feb. 27.

  Jordan Friedman has been named director of health education for the Health Education Division of the Columbia University Health Service. He has been a health educator at Columbia since 1994, and specializes in stress management.

  Friedman is the author of The Stress Manager’s Manual, and holds a master’s in public health from NYU.
