he Division of Special Programs was officially renamed Continuing Education and Special Programs (CE/SP) by the University Trustees during their Mar. 6 weekend meeting.
I am pleased that the central administration and the Trustees agreed to the name change, Dean Frank Wolf said.
The new name, which Wolf proposed with the support of Vice President and Dean of Arts and Sciences David Cohen, both clarifies and spotlights the important dual role of CE/SP.
Wolf explained that the old name was misleading, since it created the impression that his unit was just a division of another school rather than an independent entity. Moreover, the old name gave no indication that Columbia even offered continuing education courses.
The change is a first, modest step in what I hope will be a bold new direction for Continuing Education and Special Programs at the University, Cohen said. Columbia should have a higher profile in the city and the nation in continuing education, as do other Ivy League universities such as Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. To this end, CE/SP should be positioned to develop new programs which are distinct from those of the five schools of the Arts and Sciences, perhaps offering its own degrees.
Wolf agreed, adding: Stay tuned; we have some exciting plans.
