Henry Schneider, 87, Moses Fund Head

Henry Schneider, a 1934 graduate of the Law School, died on Feb. 9. He was a successful New York tax lawyer and the president of a foundation that assisted hospitals, cultural institutions, parks and Columbia. He was 87.

  After earning his degree from the Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review, Schneider joined Moses & Singer, where he practiced tax, trust and estate, and corporate law, eventually becoming a senior partner

  In 1981, he became special counsel to the firm so he could devote more time to philanthropic pursuits of the Henry and Lucy G. Moses Fund, which he presided over for many years.

  Since its creation 56 years ago, the Henry and Lucy Moses Fund has donated more than $200 million to various organizations and causes, including the Mount Sinai Medical Center and Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, the Central Park Conservancy and the fight against AIDS, among others. As president of the Henry and Lucy Moses Fund and as a long-time advisor to the late Lucy G. Moses, Schneider made many contributions to the welfare of New York City and its residents.

  He was instrumental in the creation of the chair now held by the dean of Columbia College and in the creation of many initiatives at the Law School, including the Lucy G. Moses Deanship, the Henry L. Moses Professorship of Law and International Organization, the Moses Faculty Fund, the Michael I. Sovern Scholarships and the Lance Liebman Scholarships. Schneider also served as chair of many annual funds and played a leading role for many years for the Law School Alumni/ae Association.
