The mens heavyweight crew has started the spring season in fine form, winning its first home regatta against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Mar. 21 and then beating Rutgers on Mar. 28 for the first time since 1990.

Both races took place at Columbias home course on the Harlem River. The heavyweights next race is this Sat., Apr. 4, against M.I.T. on the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass. On that day, the mens lightweight crew will race Navy at home.
Womens varsity crew did not fare as well in its first race, falling to Pennsylvania and Yale in Philadelphia on Mar. 28.
In its first season in Ivy League competition, the womens lacrosse team had a strong showing against Vermont last Sunday, coming off a 171 loss to top-ranked Princeton last week. Katie Bergstrom, CC00, scored four goals in the 1714 defeat. The Lions next home game is against Lehigh on Apr. 7 at 4:00 P.M.
Mens tennis defeated Princeton and Navy in two Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis Association matches at home last weekend. On Mar. 27, the Lions beat Navy 61 (with a sweep of the singles). The next day, Columbia beat the Tigers 43. In that match, Ogidi Obi, a senior from Princeton, N.J., won a 3-set victory at No. 4 singles.

The womens team fell to Princeton 81 on Mar. 28, but will face Cornell at home this Friday afternoon, Apr. 3, at 2:00 P.M.
The Columbia Relays last Saturday may prove a bellwether for the Lions track season, as Columbia took several first place finishes against a dozen schools in the New York area. A new school record was set by the womens 4x200 relay team: junior Monica Ortiz of Brooklyn; first-year De-Lea Deane of Silver Springs, Md.; sophomore Diana Baraniewicz of Philadelphia, and senior Alycia Riccobono of Los Angeles.
Jon-Mychal Bowman, a junior hurdler from Baltimore, easily won the 110-meter event. Sophomore Cie-Jai Brown of Elmont, N.Y., placed first in the triple jump.
