Columbia’s Top Ten Web Sites

Popular Destinations on the Information Superhighway

Columbia web pages are popular destinations on the information superhighway, with 25 million visits totalling 200 gigabytes last month.

The top 10 Columbia sites, based on volume of usage in March, were released by Steve van Leeuwen of AcIS.

This data represents only those sites on the main University Web server, which does not include the Health Sciences Campus, Lamont, Journalism, Engineering and other departmental Web servers.

Not included in the top ten is the ColumbiaWeb Home Page (http://www.columbia.edu/), which is the main entry to web sites at Columbia. This site received 640,000 hits in March—or 23,000 accesses per day—68 percent of which were from Columbia campuses or via dial-in to Columbia’s modem pool by Columbians.

While Columbia’s home page is the main entry, it is possible to reach Columbia web pages by entering the site address directly, or by using Internet “bookmarks.”

  The top ten:

  1. Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations, ninth edition (1901): 117,000 hits (0.2 percent on-campus); http://www.columbia.edu/acis/bartleby/bartlett/

  2. Go Ask Alice!—Interactive Health Question & Answer Service: 50,000 (1.5 percent on-campus); http://www.columbia.edu/cu/healthwise/

  3. (tie). University Directory of Faculty, Staff, and Students: 38,000 (57 percent on-campus); http://www.columbia.edu/cu/dir/

  4. (tie). Graduate School of Business: 38,000 (27 percent on-campus); http://www.columbia.edu/cu/business/

  5. Strunk’s Elements of Style (1918): 36,000 (0.1 percent on-campus); http://www.columbia.edu/acis/bartleby/strunk/

  6. Student Services page: 35,000 (61 percent on-campus); http://www.columbia.edu/cu/students/

  7. Columbia University Libraries: 30,000 (55 percent on-campus); http://www.columbia.edu/cu/libraries/

  8. School of Law: 17,000 (40 percent on-campus); http://www.columbia.edu/cu/law/

  10. Center for Career Services: 11,000 (78 percent on-campus); http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ccs/

Note: Numbers represent only main index page accesses for a four-week period in March 1998. To arrive at a consistent benchmark, all multiple accesses of associated files and graphics files were excluded.
