    “The Caucasian Chalk Circle”
Mia Yoo as Grusha in Brecht’s “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” at La MaMa Experimental Theater Club.

Graduate students of the Oscar Hammerstein II Center for Theater Studies at Columbia’s School of the Arts are part of the collaborating team staging Bertold Brecht’s “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” at La MaMa Experimental Theater Club, 74A E. 4th St., until May 31. The play, which is directed by Andrei Serban (director of the Hammerstein Center), co-directed by Nikolaus Wolcz, with music composed by Elizabeth Swados, is a parable of the effects of war on individual lives, personal responsibility and human choices in the face of profound difficulty and the paradoxes of life. The 16 performing graduating students, whom Serban has trained using the same techniques that he used when forming La MaMa’s original Great Jones Repertory, take on multiple roles and many major roles are played by different actors over the course of the performance.
