olumbia is one of five colleges and universities to be honored this year by the Harry Truman Scholarship Foundation.

  Columbia has had 16 Truman Scholars over the past 22 years.

  The Truman Foundation Honor Institution Award will be given to Columbia because of its active encouragement of outstanding young people to pursue careers in public service, its sustained success in helping students win Truman Scholarships and its having at least one Truman Scholar in 1996.

  Columbia College’s Truman faculty representative is assistant dean Kathleen McDermott.

  The other recipients this year are the University of Chicago, Dartmouth, Mississippi State and Claremont McKenna.
