Scientist Survives Crash into Volcano
scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Institute recently survived a automobile accident, in which his vehicle plunged 300 feet into a dormant Icelandic volcano that he was studying.
William Menke, a 44-year-old Columbia seismologist, and his Icelandic research colleague were thought to have been killed in the May 13 crash, but rescue teams persisted and found the two in relative good health: Menke suffered a broken collarbone and his companion broke her arm.
The vehicle slid down an snowy slope inside the rim of the volcano, which in all other spots was covered with rock.
Pilot Grants Available for Research on Elderly
he Columbia Center for the Active Life of Minority Elders (CALME) recently announced that $20,000 grants are available for research relevant to the centers mission, which is to promote and support research that addresses gaps between minority and majority elders in health outcomes, functional life expectancy, access to care, quality of care, preventive services and health-related behaviors and aspects of the physical and social environment.
