Faculty Members Receive Honorary Degrees from Universities, Colleges
n this season of commencement exercises, Columbia faculty members were among those decorated with honorary degrees:
- Caroline Walker Bynum, Morris A. & Alma Schapiro Professor of History, received an honorary degree from Wesleyan.
- David Weiss Halivni, Lucius N. Littauer Professor of Classical Jewish Civilization, received an honorary doctorate of philosophy from Tel Aviv University.
- C. Dominique Toran-Allerand, professor of cell biology, received an honorary doctorate from Smith College.
- Visiting scholar Wei Jingsheng delivered the keynote address at Bard College, where Columbia biologist Nancy Wexler was also awarded an honorary degree.
In other news of faculty awards, Arthur A. Goren, R&B Knapp Professor of American Jewish History, received the American Jewish Communitys most prestigious honor, the Jewish Cultural Achievement Award, from the National Foundation for Jewish Culture at the Harmonie Club in New York City.
