Mareen Howard Joins Six Other Faculty in the American Academy

Maureen Howard, novelist and professor of writing in the School of the Arts, has been elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She and six other Columbia faculty members, announced earlier, were chosen for the prestigious honor at the Academy’s Cambridge, Mass., headquarters on April 17. Formal induction will take place Oct. 3.

  Howard’s novels include A Lover’s Almanac, Natural History, Expensive Habits, and Before My Time. She has also written an autobiography, Facts of Life, and a play, Songs at Twilight. She edited Seven Women Writers and The Penguin Book of Contemporary American Essays and she has published articles and reviews in leading newspapers and magazines. She has been a full-time faculty member in the Writing Division since 1993 and held adjunct positions during the previous 13 years. She has also taught at Yale, Rutgers, Amherst and Princeton.

  The others elected to the Academy this year are Vincent Blasi, Louis E. Brus, Ainslie T. Embree, Jack Greenberg, Robert A. Mundell and Jeremy J. Waldron.
