The Art of Activism

Photograph. An exhibit on the life and achievements of Soong Ching Ling, activist in the proclamation of the People's Republic of China, is on display in the Kress Rare Book and Special Collections Reading Room of the C.V. Starr East Asian Library through Nov. 30. Included in the exhibit are pictures, information and artifacts highlighting her work as a state leader, peace advocate and anti-fascist activist. It is presented by the Soong Ching Ling Foundation (China). Above, one of her flower paintings. Exhibit hours are Mon.-Fri., from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

Smooth Sailing

Photograph. Paintings by Haitian-born, New York-educated artist Yolene Legrand are on exhibit in Buell Hall through Nov. 20. Legrand attended the Art Students League, where her work has been displayed for the past three years. Her paintings have also been seen recently at the Sea Bell Gallery in Virginia and the Ward-Nasse Gallery in New York. They reflect the colors of Haiti and depict local landscapes. Concerned with artifacts of urban civilization and culture, Goldstein captures scenes which depict places where encounters have occurred and the subsequent transformation of those spaces.
