Lecture on 'The Father of Times Square'

Oscar Andrew Hammerstein will present a slide lecture on his great-great grandfather, titled "Oscar Hammerstein I: The Father of Times Square," on Mar. 21 at 4:00 P.M. in 710 Dodge.

Oscar Hammerstein I (1847-1919) was an inventor, writer, editor, publisher, composer, speculator, designer, builder, promoter, showman and opera impressario who built Times Square's Olympia Theatre in 1895.

Oscar Andrew Hammerstein, who is also grandson of lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II (CC '16, Law '18), lectures at schools and other organizations on his family's role in the history of the American musical theatre, has collected photographs, blueprints, unpublished manuscripts and other materials for the Hammerstein family archives for ten years. He is currently writing a biography and producing a documentary on Oscar Hammerstein I.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
