The temporary building is up, but now it needs a name and an artistic touch. So, the Office of Student Activities is sponsoring a contest.
They want ideas for a name and a design. The best suggestion for a mural on the east facade of the building will be worth $500.
And the person who thinks up the best name for the building will win $100.
A committee of students and administrators will select the winning design and name. The chosen design will be painted onto the building this summer.
Entries for either contest are due in the Office of Student Activities, in 206 Ferris Booth Hall, by Apr. 5.
For the next three years, the temporary building, located in front of John Jay, will house some student offices, the Double Discovery Center and the bookstore. During that time, Ferris Booth Hall (FBH) will be demolished and the new state-of-the-art student center, Alfred Lerner Hall, will be constructed.
In April, the temporary building will open, while parts of FBH will begin to close. Demolition of FBH will take place in phases, with interior demolition starting next month. The building will be razed this summer.
In October, the foundation for Lerner Hall will be laid. In the summer of 1999, the new student center will be complete and ready for the start of school in the fall of 1999.
