Commencement exercises next Wednesday, May 15, will mark the conclusion of Columbia's 242nd year. President Rupp will deliver the commencement address and will confer degrees on more than 8,000 graduates of Columbia's 15 schools and affiliated institutions Barnard and Teachers College in exercises on Low Plaza beginning at 10:30 A.M.
Individual schools have planned additional commencement activities for their graduating classes. Among the speakers, honorees and visitors will be U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Robert E. Rubin, NBA Commissioner David Stern, British actor Sir Ian McKellen, Pulitzer Prize winner Doris Kearns Goodwin and American Medical Association President Lonnie Bristow.
Commencement Week begins Sun., May 12, with the Baccalaureate Service, an interdenominational religious service beginning at 4:00 P.M. in St. Paul's Chapel.
The multicultural ceremony, planned by students, staff and religious counselors of the Earl Hall Center, is open to all bachelor's degree candidates graduating from Columbia College, Barnard College, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of General Studies and the School of Nursing.
Delivering this year's baccalaureate address will be Imam Izak-El M. Pasha of the Malcolm Shabazz Mosque of New York City. Participating in the ceremony will be the Barnard-Columbia Gospel Choir, and the Barnard-Columbia Chorus and the Chapel Choir. The Gospel Choir will sing "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "More Abundantly," and the Chorus and Choir will perform "Cantante Domino" and "The Consonance." Roger Lowsher, SEAS '97, will perform the organ postlude.
Among those scheduled to speak are President Rupp, Barnard President Judith R. Shapiro, Columbia College Dean Austin Quigley, Robert Solomon of the School of General Studies, United Methodist Chaplain Rev. James F. Karpen and Earl Hall Acting Director and Presbyterian/UCC Chaplain H. Scott Matheney.
Students scheduled to participate include John Cardinale, CC '96; Margaret McCoy, CC '96; Steven K. Furer, SEAS '96; Philip Skelding, CC '96; Jomysha Delgado, Barnard '96; Sandhya Nankani, CC '96; Alissa Douglas, SEAS '96; Chris Glaros, CC '96; Eurydice Kelley, Barnard '96; Estelle Raboni, GS '96; Osmari West, CC '96, and Katherine Gomez, CC '96.
Commencement Exercises on Wednesday are expected to draw tens of thousands of students, parents, friends and alumni, who will watch the proceedings from rows of seats stretching from Low Plaza to Butler Library.
Marshals will lead the graduates and anniversary alumni classes as they proceed to their seats; head marshal for candidate procession will be John H. Rohan, professor of physical education; head marshal for the academic procession will be Georgiana Jagiello, the Virgil C. Damon Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Other head marshals will be: Edmund J. Sullivan, director of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association; Stephen G. Berry, director of printing and mail services; Peter M. Herford, associate professor of journalism; Aaron Schneider, dean of studies at Barnard; Kenneth Torrey, professor of physical education; Emmett S. Watson, director of planned giving, the office of University development and alumni relations, and Brian Bodine, assistant director of intercollegiate athletics.
Martha C. Howell, professor of history, will preside. The invocation will be given by Rev. Faith Carmichael, parent of Daniel O. Carmichael, GS '96. The benediction will be offered by Rabbi James Rosenberg, CC '66, parent of Karen R. Rosenberg, CC '96.
Honorary hood marshals are selected each year from the 25th and 50th anniversary classes. This years marshals are Philip L. Milstein, CC '71 and Howard W. Vreeland, SEAS '46 and '49 .
This year, for the first time, teaching awards will be presented by President Rupp to the following Columbia faculty members: Teodolinda Barolini, professor and chairwoman of Italian; Allan Blaer, director of undergraduate programs and laboratory operations and adjunct professor of physics; Herbert Chase, associate professor of clinical medicine; James Shenton, professor of history, and Edward Tayler, Lionel Trilling Professor in the Humanities.
Alumni Federation
After the ceremonies the Alumni Federation will hold its 98th Commencement Day Luncheon at 12:45 P.M. in Low Rotunda, following a 12:15 P.M. reception in the Faculty Room.
Alumni medals will be presented by Carmen Ortiz-Neu, P&S '63, chairwoman of the 1996 alumni medal committee, to: Katharine Elizabeth Archibald SIPA '83; Peter A. Basilevsky CC'67, Law '72; Lawson F. Bernstein, CC '40; Edgar M. Housepian CC '49, P&S '53; Sheldon E. Isakoff CC '45, M.S.E. '47, Ph.D. '52; Carol Murray Lane, Barnard '60; Ronald H. Lauterstein, PH '58; Marylin B. The luncheon speaker will be Sadako Ogata, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Also making remarks will be President Rupp and Keville Frederickson, N '64, M.Ed '71, Ed.D. '74, president of the Alumni Federation.
Following is the schedule of school events:
Columbia College: Class Day exercises for the seniors will be held Tuesday beginning with an assembly on South Lawn at 10:00 A.M. Robert E. Rubin, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, will give the Class Day address. Other speakers will include President Rupp, Dean Austin E. Quigley, Dean of Students Roger Lehecka, CC '67, and Martin S. Kaplan, CC '61, president of the Alumni Association. Student speakers will include Yair Yehuda Galil, class salutatorian; Elena Khazanova, class valedictorian; Uchenna Cletus Acholonu Jr., president of the senior class, and Christopher Michael Glaros, president of the student council. Class pins will be presented to Henry S. Coleman, CC '46; Norman N. Cohen, CC '46, and Bernard Sunshine, CC '46. Diplomas will be distributed Wednesday following commencement.
School of Engineering and Applied Science: Class Day will be held Tuesday May 14 at 6:00 P.M. in Levien Gymnasium. Guest speaker will be Y.D. Kim, president of Hyundai Corp. USA. Dean Zvi Galil will present awards. Class salutatorian is Dmitriy Krylov; class valedictorian is Ajay Deshavkly. Distinguished faculty teaching awards will be given to three Engineering faculty. Diplomas will be distributed Wednesday at 1:30 P.M. in each department of the Engineering School.
School of General Studies: Class Day will be held Tues., May 14 at 5:00 P.M. in the Kathryn Bache Miller Theatre. The guest speaker will be Joseph Califano, former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare in the administration of President Johnson and now chairman and president of Columbia's Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. He also teaches in Columbia's School of Public Health. Other speakers will include President Rupp, Dean Gillian Lindt, Richard Ferraro, dean of students, Barbara Tischler, director of admissions and financial aid, and Philip Ehrlich, president of the Alumni Association. Class salutatorian is Boris Kobrinsky; class valedictorian is Nancy Falkin. Diplomas may be picked up Wednesday after commencement in Lewisohn Lounge.
Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation: The school's ceremony will be held on Wed., May 15, at 2:00 P.M. in St. Paul's Chapel. Dean Bernard Tschumi will address the graduates, who will receive their degrees at the ceremony. Student awards will also be presented.
School of the Arts: The presentation of diplomas by the chairmen of the various divisions will take place on Wed., May 15, at 1:00 P.M. in the Kathryn Bache Miller Theatre. Dean Robert Fitzpatrick will preside. Sir Ian McKellen will be the guest speaker. McKellen is the celebrated British actor, director and producer who has won 18 major acting awards. He currently is professor of contemporary theatre at Oxford. A reception in the lobby of Dodge Hall will follow.
Graduate School of Arts and Sciences: A convocation for Ph.D. candidates will take place on Tues., May 14, at 3:30 P.M. in St. Paul's Chapel. The convocation address will be given by Ronald Breslow, University Professor and professor of chemistry. Sarah E. Chinn, a Ph.D. candidate in English and comparative literature, will speak on behalf of the candidates. The candidates will be presented by Helen V. Milner, professor of political science, and David J. Helfand, chairman of the department of astronomy.
Dean Eduardo Macagno will announce the student winners of awards for teaching excellence: Moustafa Bayoumi, English and comparative literature; Elizabeth Chamberlain, Spanish and Portuguese, and Adrianne Slyz, astronomy.
A reception will follow on the lawn outside Philosophy Hall. On Wednesday, a reception honoring the graduates will be held in 301 Philosophy at Noon. Diplomas will be presented there.
Columbia Business School: The school's recognition ceremony will take place on Tues., May 14, at 6:00 P.M. in the City Center, W. 55th St. between the Ave. of the Americas and Seventh Ave. The guest speaker will be Karl M. von der Heyden, senior advisor the Clipper Group, a private merchant bank. He will speak on "Navigating Toward a Borderless World." The Robert W. Lear Award will be given to Professor Michael Kirschenheiter; the Singhvi Prize for Scholarship in the Classroom to Professor John Whitney, and the Margaret Chandler Award for Commitment to Excellence to Professor Roger Mesznik. Diplomas will be distributed on Wednesday from Noon to 2:00 P.M. in the lobby of Uris Hall.
School of International and Public Affairs: The school's ceremony will be held on Tues., May 14, at 2:30 P.M. on Ancell Plaza. The guest speaker will be Jose Ayala Lasso, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Student awards will be presented. Diplomas will be given to graduates after commencement on the sixth floor of the International Affairs Building.
Graduate School of Journalism: Journalism Day will be Tues., May 14, in the World Room. The program will begin at 10:00 A.M. The Pringle Lecture will be given by Doris Kearns Goodwin, the 1995 Pulitzer Prize winner in history. The 1996 Mike Berger Award will be given to Robert M. Lipsyte of The New York Times for his "Coping" column on life in New York City. The 1996 Paul Tobenkin Award will be presented to David Rohde of The Christian Science Monitor for his coverage of Bosnia. Student awards will follow.
On Wed., May 15, at 3:30 P.M. in the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine the graduating class will receive their diplomas. Gene Roberts, managing editor of The New York Times, will receive the Columbia Journalism Award.
School of Law: David J. Stern, Law '66, commissioner of the National Basketball Association and a University Trustee, will deliver the major address at the Law School's ceremony on Wed., May 15, at 8:00 P.M. in Carnegie Hall. Highlights of the ceremony will include the presentation of the Alumni Association's Distinguished Achievement Award to Ida Klaus '31, the oldest living female graduate of the school. Graduates will include Li Lu, the Chinese student democracy leader during the 1989 Tianamen Square massacre. He will be among the student speakers. Diplomas will be presented to the graduates during the ceremony.
School of Social Work: The school will hold its ceremony on Wed., May 15, beginning at 2:30 P.M. in Levien Gymnasium. Carol H. Meyer, Ruth Harris Ottman Professor of Family and Child Welfare, will be the chief speaker. The National Association of Social Workers Award will also be presented, and students will receive their diplomas.
School of Nursing: The school will hold its ceremony on Wed., May 15, at 5:00 P.M. in the Alumni Auditorium. Loretta Ford, dean emeritus of the School of Nursing, University of Rochester, will be the keynote speaker. The ceremony will include the presentation of diplomas to graduates and be followed by a 6:00 P.M. reception in the Clark Conference Center.
College of Physicians and Surgeons: The medical school will hold its ceremony at 2:30 P.M. in the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center Garden. Lonnie R. Bristow, president of the American Medical Association, will be the chief speaker. Students will receive their diplomas and major awards will be given, including the following faculty awards: The Doctor Harold and Golden Lamport Award for Excellence in Basic Academic Research; the Charles W. Bohmfalk Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching in the Pre-Clinical years; the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Award, and the P&S Distinguished Service Award. A reception will follow in the Bard Hall Lounge.
School of Public Health: The school will hold its ceremony on Wed., May 15, at 5:30 P.M. in the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center Garden. June Osborn, an international expert on AIDS and emerging infections, will deliver the major address. Diplomas will be presented to the graduates during the ceremony. Following will be a reception in the Riverview Lounge.
School of Dental and Oral Surgery: The school will hold its exercises on Thurs., May 16, at 11:00 A.M. in the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center Garden. William Ten Pas, president of the American Dental Association, will give the major address. Major student awards will be given and the graduates will receive their degrees. A reception will follow in the Bard Hall Lounge.
Program in Physical Therapy: The program will hold its ceremony Sunday, May 12, at 2:00 P.M. in 401 Hammer Health Science Center. John Hockenberry, writer and commentator for NBC's "Dateline," will speak. A reception will follow in the Clark Conference Center.
Programs in Occupational Therapy: The programs will hold their ceremony in Alumni Auditorium on Wed., May 15, at 2:00 P.M. Barbara Neuhaus, adjunct associate professor of occupational therapy at Columbia, will speak. A reception will follow in the P&S Faculty Club.
Barnard College: Barnard's 104th commencement ceremony will take place on Tues., May 14, at 2:30 P.M. on the Barnard Lawn. President Judith Shapiro will be among the speakers. Diplomas will be awarded Wednesday after commencement on the upper level of McIntosh.
Teachers College: For the first time in its history, TC will hold two events, one for masters degree candidates and one for doctoral candidates.
The masters program will begin at 4:00 P.M. on Tues., May 14, at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Teachers College Medals will be awarded to Ramon Cortines, chancellor of New York City public schools from 1993 to 1995; Paulo Fraire, a Brazilian educator, and Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot, a sociologist. President Arthur Levine will also deliver an address.
On Wed., May 15, doctoral graduates will be honored at Riverside Church beginning at 2:30 P.M.
All TC graduates will receive their diplomas at this event.
