This satellite image shows the intersection of a chain of seamounts with a huge ocean trench (pink swath on left). At this juncture, Columbia scientists believe built-up stress has caused a new tear in the ocean floor (thin horizontal line to right of juncture.) This tear is 800 kilometres long and located northwest of New Zealand. FULL STORY
