Langer Is Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs

Al Langer has been named Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs. Langer will manage the Office of Athletic Communications, and will assume responsibility for alumni relations and annual giving to athletics.

Langer comes to Columbia after spending 11 years at Montclair State University. While at Montclair, Langer served as the Director of Sports Information and Marketing for eight years and spent the last three years as the Assistant Athletic Director for External Operations and Media Relations.

"Al Langer is going to bring our already very respectable athletic communications and alumni relations to a higher level," Athletic Director John Reeves said. "He served in a similar capacity at Montclair State and was responsible for many innovations in communications and alumni relations."

As the director for external operations at Montclair, Langer was in charge of marketing, fund raising, promotions and community relations for the athletic department. He also continued supervising the sports information office.

Langer has been the media production consultant and coordinator for the New Jersey Jackals Professional Baseball Team since 1998. He was also the media relations and information consultant/director for the New Jersey Athletic Conference from 1988-91 and then again in 1996-98.

Langer has been a fixture in the metropolitan area as president and secretary/treasurer of the Metropolitan Football Writers Association.

Langer has also been the head statistician for the Meadowlands Kickoff Classic since 1993, and the NCAA tournament director for the Mid-Atlantic baseball regionals since 1994. He designed and maintained Montclair State's athletic Web page and won 11 national awards for his media work.

Langer received his B.A. from Rutgers and his M.A. in sports administration from Montclair State.
