Daphne Estwick will join Continuing Education and Special Programs as Assistant Dean. Since 1995 she has been Director of the Liberal Studies master's program at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. She has a MS from the School of Library Service and a MA from the School of General Studies.
Eric A. Rose, M.D., chairman of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief, has been appointed the Morris & Rose Milstein Professor of Surgery at the Physicians and Sugeons' Department of Surgery. Rose is a graduate of Columbia College and the College of Physicians and Sugeons and is a leader in cardiac surgery and cardiovascular research.
Herbert J. Gans, the Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology, has won the 1999 Award for Public Understanding of Sociology from the American Sociological Association (ASA). "Herbert Gans stands as a model of commitment to public intellectual life, inspiring us all to be more publicly engaged in our sociological endeavors," the ASA said.
The Columbia Business School awarded its Botwinick Prize in Business Ethics to Henry R. Kravis, MBA '69, founder and chairman of the New York City Investment Fund, for his leadership in job creation and economic development.
The Melvin L. Morris Periodontal Research Fund presented its annual awards to this year's winners: Eliaz Kaufman, for excellence in postgraduate work, and to Rakhi Sinha-Morton, who received a research fellowship for the second consecutive year. Morris, who died in 1993, was a faculty member at the School of Dental and Oral Surgery for more than 50 years.
Barnard College and Columbia Law School Alumna Nicole A. Gordon won the 1999 Lawrence A. Wein Prize for Social Responsibility, awarded by the Columbia Law School. Gordon is the executive director of the New York City Campaign Finance Board. She shares the prize with the New York law firm of Davis, Polk & Wardwell, which has had a lead role in the Political Asylum Workshop for Columbia Law students.
