Brenda McGowan has been named the Ruth Harris Ottman Professor in Family and Child Welfare at the School of Social Work. The chair was established in 1992 by Ottman, a prominent social worker and graduate of the school. McGowan is the second person to hold the chair.
Nationally recognized as a leading educator, researcher and advocate in family and child welfare services, she recently co-directed a four-year study of the Center for Family Life in Brooklyn and is working on a book about this research for Columbia University Press.
A Columbia faculty member for more than two decades who received her doctorate in social work at Columbia, McGowan has been a full professor since 1985.
She has participated in national task forces on family and child welfare services, including the 1980 White House Conference on Families, and has been on the editorial boards of Social Casework, Urban and Social Change Review and Children and Youth Services.
