Encyclopaedia Iranica

More than 400 members and friends of the Iranian-American community gathered in Low Library on Friday, Nov. 5 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Encyclopaedia Iranica, a multi-volume project on Persian history and culture. The Persian Heritage Benefit Gala honored several high-tech pioneers and executives of Iranian descent, including from left, Nader Darehshori, chairman, president and CEO of Houghton Mifflin Company; Kamran Elahian, CEO, NeoMagic Corporation; and Mory Ejabat, president, Zhone Technologies. They are shown with Columbia Professor Emeritus Eshar Yarshater, right, editor of the Encyclopaedia Iranica, which is published through the Center for Iranian Studies. Nine volumes have been published and 15 more volumes are to follow. The Encyclopaedia Iranica Foundation has established an endowment with a goal of $15 million to support the project, which also receives funds through the National Endowment for the Humanities, private institutions and individuals. Also honored at the gala were Afshin Mohebbi, President and CEO of Qwest Communications and Pierre Omidyar, Chairman and founder, e-Bay Inc.
