James Hare

Biography
James P. Hare is a PhD candidate in South Asian Religion at Columbia University. He graduated from Emory University with a BA magna cum laude in Religion and Political Science and earned an MTS from Harvard University and an MPhil in Religion from Columbia University. He is writing his dissertation on Nābhādās's Bhaktamāl and its role in shaping modern Hinduism. This late sixteenth- or early-seventeenth century collection of hagiographies praises over 900 saints and, in so doing, envisions a devotional community far larger than the sectarian context in which Nābhādās wrote. This dissertation explores this text, its commentaries, manuscripts, and print editions to trace the role it played in the consolidation of Hinduism. He serves as the rapporteur for the Columbia University Seminar on South Asia and has taught at Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts.
