Spring 2004

From Humble Beginings

Sabor started off as Columbia University’s first and only Latino Dance Team. We have evolved into much more than just a dance team and more than just Latino. Like any great chef, we know about flavor. We bring the best taste possibe by combining just the right ingredients.

We found that the best way for people understand our culture and background is to demonstrate and celebrate the similarities that we share with other ethnic groups. We have expanded to performing various South Asian, Polynesian, modern, and jazz dance choreographies among others. We have hosted events with multicultural, Chinese, Indian, Bengali, Jewish, Hawaiian, and non-cultural specific groups. Today our members originate from countries all around the world.

We are not just great dancers; our artistic talents range from vocal, drama, to the visual arts. We are also concerned with the community and invest our time and funding to the Releve Program. The program is a community service initiative targeted toward high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds who hold an interest in the arts and who would like to learn more about college and the arts. We provide them with educational workshops and materials about college and the arts. Our ultimate goal is to motivate more youth to pursue higher education.
