Compline is the
final office, celebrated before retiring to bed. It expresses
satisfaction at the end of a day's work, but also fear at the dangers
of the approaching night. It asks for peace and rest, for protection,
and for light in the darkness. It culminates with the Song of Simeon (Nunc
dimittis), and its request for the tranquillity of death. |
