Students for Environmental and Economic Justice is a Barnard and
Columbia student group dedicated to advancing ecological sustainability,
workplace democracy, and human freedom, and to ensuring that university
policies and practices reflect these goals. We have watchdogged
university investments, supported workplace
struggles worldwide and on our
campus, and helped bring trillion-dollar
ecological criminals to the bargaining table.
Our campaigns right now include:
- Tree-free paper:
- The university uses very little recycled paper, and still uses paper
made from old growth wood. We are helping departments to find
cost-effective and sustainable alternatives.
Living wages, not
sweatshops:
- The university has committed to living wages for the workers making
its, yet many remain in poverty and unsafe working conditions. Along with
other student groups and garment
workers' organizations to hold sweatshop owners accountable through
transparency.
Student food cooperative:
- Don't like the dining options on campus? We're making our own, a
student-run cooperative with decent prices and a wide selection of
fair-trade, vegan, and bulk goods.
Socially responsible investing:
- SEEJ helped establish the Committees on Socially Responsible
Investing to ensure that Barnard and Columbia endowments
are profiting from development, not exploitation. This year we are
creating comprehensive principles on
sexual misconduct policy for Barnard's investments.
Interested in joining? SEEJ meets Tuesdays at 9pm in the Schiff Room of
Earl
Hall. Feel free to join our announcements list
or contact us with any questions.
