Question: I’ve never been to a Seminar meeting before, how do I attend a University Seminar?

Answer: Please explore the list of current seminars.  If one interests you, email the chair listed and describe your involvement in the subject of Seminar studies.  Attendance is by invitation only.  Chairs invite guests they think will contribute to and benefit from the Seminar.

Question: How do I become a formal member of the University Seminars?

Answer: Every seminar has a different procedure, but most will have you attend as a guest for a trial period before you can apply for formal membership.  If you have attended a few meetings and the chair invites you to become a member, you should fill out the Associate Nomination Form and submit it to your seminar’s Chair.  The Chair will then forward the form to our office with a brief letter of nomination.  Members must have a doctoral degree or equivalent expertise in the field of the Seminar.

Question: What benefits are available to Associate Members of the University Seminars?

Answer: Associate Members do not have a Columbia position, but are issued a Columbia University I.D. Card which permits access into Columbia’s Libraries with reading privileges. Borrowing privileges can be arranged for a monthly fee of $35 from the Library Information Office at Butler Library (lio@columbia.edu; Voice: 212-854-7309). Associate Members are also eligible to use Dodge Fitness Center for a monthly fee (http://gocolumbialions.com)—these services can be arranged with the membership office at 212-854-2546.  For information, visit our Member Services section.

Question: My I.D. Card has expired or disappeared, how do I get a new Columbia I.D. Card?

Answer: Please contact our office at (212) 854-2389.  We will first need to confirm the active status of your membership in the Seminars.  Then, we can issue an ID Card Letter, which you will take to the Columbia ID Office in 204 Kent Hall.  After taking your picture, the I.D. office will issue a new I.D. card on the spot.

Question: Who is eligible to apply for Schoff (in the Social Studies) or Warner (in other fields) publication subsidies?

Answer: Leonard Hastings Schoff's Will left a fund to the University Seminars to support the publication of materials that emerge from a University Seminar.  Members, Associates, Rapporteurs, regular guests, and speakers who have discussed work at a Seminar which has subsequently been accepted for publication may apply.  Please see the guidelines for more information.
