Modern Europe

The University Seminar on Modern Europe seeks to advance knowledge on the region's history, politics, and society. Emphasizing interdisciplinary dialogue, the seminar provides a venue for sustained discussion with colleagues, and thus contributes to the enrichment of our intellectual community. Europe challenges us as a vital site of tradition and innovation, an area that is undergoing rapid, often unsettling transformations.

We approach Europe from diverse perspective, complementing nation-oriented studies, while placing Europe in transatlantic, multi-national, and global contexts. We organize our seminar around specific questions, ones that are both broad-minded to ensure inclusion, but also clearly defined to establish focus and purpose for participants. Upcoming themes will include: The Unraveling of the Transatlantic Relationship; Higher Education in Europe; Islam in Europe; The Expansion and Integration of the European Union; Europe, NATO and International Security; Europe, Immigration, and Diaspora; The Reintegration of Eastern and Western Europe; The Future of the West; and Nationalism in the New Europe.
