Basics

The most basic ways to get involved include going to general body meetings, which are held in Lerner West Ramp Lounge at 8pm certain Mondays (check the weekly SHPE update e-mail), and reading the weekly SHPE general body e-mails to see what events may be coming up. If you are not on our listserv or have any questions, e-mail shpe@columbia.edu.

National SHPE Conference

This conference, which takes place in the Fall, is attended by more than 300 of the nation's top employers and is a great opportunity for any member to:

• Get face-to-face time with interviewers.
• Obtain internships ad entry-level positions.

SHPE Foundation

IBM MentorPlace

An outreach program, involving promoting science, technology, engineering, and math to Hispanic youth.

How to Join

• Sign up at one of the first general body meetings or e-mail shpe@columbia.edu.
• Complete 30-minute training (via phone).
• ***Training for the 2011-2012 academic year has already been conducted. If interested, watch for IBM MentorPlace news at the beginning of next year.

Requirements

• Weekly online activities with IBM employee and 5th grade JFK student (a commitment of about 10-15 minutes per week).
• Visit to JFK in the Fall, involving activities with the JFK students and an opportunity to speak with IBM employees.
• Science activites with JFK students and IBM employees in the Spring on campus.
• Both events take place on Fridays and are approximately five-hour commitments.
