A Letter from our VP Recruitment
Hey Girls!
I’m so glad you’ve decided to stop by the Sigma Delta Tau Recruitment page!
Throughout the recruitment process, you will be given the opportunity to learn exactly what makes Sigma Delta Tau such a unique and special organization. You will be introduced to the wonderful and diverse women that make up our sorority and will be offered a glimpse of the numerous benefits that come from involvement in Columbia’s Greek community.
Below you can find detailed information about the Parties that make up Formal Recruitment. There’s a lot of information, but please don’t be overwhelmed – Recruitment is a really fun and extremely rewarding experience!
When I first arrived at Columbia, sororities were hardly on my radar – I grew up in a small town and attended a small high school and long imagined college a break from this insularity. However, soon after settling in, I missed being part of a small and intimate community and began seeking such an environment at Columbia. Several of my friends were going through Recruitment and encouraged me to register also. As soon as I walked into the Recruitment room, I knew that I had made the right decision; I felt comfortable around the sisters of Sigma Delta Tau and knew that I could find with them the community I so desired.
Joining Sigma Delta Tau has allowed me to become part of a warm, welcoming, and caring sisterhood. I now have over 100 sisters – each unique and with different interests – but all of whom I can turn to regardless of the time, day or night. Whether my sisters and I are celebrating birthdays or studying in Butler, going out to eat or watching TV, traveling the world together or sitting in class, there is always constant laughter and smiles and we are always having fun.
Becoming a sister of Sigma Delta Tau is by far the best decision that I made since coming to Columbia. I really can’t encourage you enough to go through Recruitment.
Hope to see you there!!
Hannah Deresiewicz
Philanthropy Night
The first event of recruitment centers on Philanthropy. Potential New Members (PNMs) will be divided into small groups and will travel to each of the four sororities. At each sorority, PNMs will be introduced to the many benefits of Greek life involvement and, more specifically, will be given the opportunity to learn about each sorority’s national philanthropy.
Sigma Delta Tau’s national philanthropy is Prevent Child Abuse American (PCAA). PCAA works to build awareness of, and prevent the abuse and neglect of, America’s children. Sigma Delta Tau hosts several events each year in order to raise money for PCAA. Last year, we held a fantastic trivia event on Low Plaza and raised over 800 dollars for PCAA. In addition, we hold an annual fundraiser at Artopolis every fall with all-you-can-eat treats; last year, we raised over $2,000 at this event.
Development Night
The second event of recruitment is called Development Night. On this night, PNMs will attend a maximum of three sororities and will spend the evening learning more about the specifics of each organization.
At Sigma Delta Tau, you will hear exactly what makes our sisterhood so exceptional. Through conversations with sisters and through the viewing of our SDT slideshow, you will learn about the personal, academic, and career benefits that come from affiliation with Sigma Delta Tau. You will also learn about our new member program, leadership and networking opportunities, awards we’ve received, and events in which we participate.
Most importantly, you will be given a better glimpse into the nature of our sisterhood. Every Sig Delt is unique and we all bring our own set of talents and interests to our sorority. But even though our majors, school affiliation, hometowns, and hobbies might differ, the thread of sisterhood connects us all.
Preference Night
Preference Night, a very elegant and special ceremony, is the final event of Recruitment. On this night, PNMs will visit a maximum of two sororities. At our Preference Night, the sisters of Sigma Delta Tau will share with you a part of our ritual. For the duration of the night, you will be paired alone with a sister who will answer for you any last questions you may have about Sigma Delta Tau and the lifelong bond of our sisterhood.

“The recruitment process can be daunting, to say the least. But by the last night of recruitment, Preference night, sharing in my first ritual with the sisters of Sigma Delta Tau made me realize what an amazing, diverse, and incredible group of women this sorority is comprised of--and I couldn't feel luckier to be a part of it.” |
Bid Day and Night
On Bid Day, each PNM finds out to which sorority she has been offered a bid. After receiving her bid, each PNM will be given the opportunity to accept or decline membership.
The recruitment process concludes with Bid Night. After you accept your bid, you will begin celebrating with your new sisters!!

“SDT is the best college family I could ask for. We're crazy, silly, down-to-earth, always there for each other, and genuinely love being sigdelts.” |
