The Harriman
Institute/East Central European
(ECE) Center, together with
the Slavic Department and other graduate departments at Columbia
University, sponsor a large number of classes,
lectures, and
conferences
dedicated to promoting scholarly knowledge and teaching about Southeastern
Europe. Students interested in studying the region are encouraged to look
at the Harriman Institute/ECE Course Listing to get a sense of the variety
of courses available.
Together with the Center for Historical Social
Science, the Harriman
Institute/ECE annually sponsors a lecture series entitled
"Southeastern
Europe: Historical Legacies and Contemporary Dynamics." The purpose of the
series is to integrate and weave together a variety of perspectives, from
historical to contemporary, and from social-scientific to policy-oriented,
into our knowledge and understanding of Southeastern Europe.
In addition, every year the Harriman Institute hosts the Annual Convention
of the Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN), which
traditionally features over a dozen panels focusing on the Balkans.

events dedicated to celebrating and perpetuating the cultural legacies of
the peoples of southeastern Europe. The Njegos Endowment for Serbian
Studies, directed by Professors John Micgiel and
Radmila
Gorup, has an
active program of lectures, exhibitions and concerts dedicated to Serbian
culture and history.
New York City also provides unique scholarly resources for the study of
Southeastern Europe. Together with the famed New York Public Library's
Slavic Division, the South Slavic holdings of Columbia University provide
the largest collection of works on the Balkans in the United States.
