Attachment problems with CUBMAIL resolved
CUIT identified the Offending modulethat was some time reading documents as text and removed it. on November 29.
Attachment problems with CUBMAIL
In the last few weeks I have received several complaints about unreadable email attachments in Word and Excel. In many cases these documents were sent from CUBMAIL.When you try to open the document Word and Excel do not recognize the file. Unfortunately this problem seems to have started around the same time as the deployment of the new CUBMAIL by CUIT.
I have reported these problems to the CU Postmaster and I know CUIT is working on identifying the source of the problem. It is happening randomly where the attachment is seen as a text file and all the program codes are striped when the attachments sent. As a result when you receive the document and try to open it with Word or Excel, the file is missing appropriate program codes that allow it to recognize the document, and the file becomes unreadable.
It is undoubtedly a frustrating problem and we are waiting to have CUIT find the cause of it and to fix it. In the meantime, we suggest that you do the following:
- keep a copy of your document that you have tested and opened in Word or Excel. Do not rely on emailed copy only.
- Note to all students: Do not Print directly from CUBMAIL
- Open the file from CUBMAIL and save to your drive and then print preview before printing
If you have examples of such documents and can provide CUIT at consultat@columbia.edu or me with information on who sent you the document and the name of the file and the email program used (if you know), I can pass it on to the postmaster who is working on solving this issue. I am confident that they will fix the problem soon.
