SIWPS Visiting Scholars, 2008-2009
Dima Adamsky (Israel) is a post-doctoral fellow at the Olin Institute for Strategic Studies at Harvard University and a visiting research fellow at the Norwegian Institute for Defense Studies. His research at Columbia will focus on nuclear strategic cultures, nuclearization of the Middle East, Jihadi strategic studies and Russian defense policy. Recent publications include:

Amr Yossef (Egypt/Italy) is a Ph.D. Candidate in the School of International Studies at the University of Trento, Italy. Mr. Yossef received his M.A. in Political Science from the American University in Cairo, Egypt; his research interests include international security, nuclear proliferation, civil-military relations, foreign policy decision-making, and regional conflicts. Mr. Yossef’s research at Columbia will focus on democratic victory theory.
Joshua L. Gleis (USA) is a Ph.D. Candidate at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, and a Pre-Doctoral Research Fellow in the International Security Program at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Mr. Gleis received his M.A. in Law and Diplomacy from Tufts University and is the author of “Israel’s Struggle against Palestinian Terrorist Organizations” in the James Rorest, ed., Countering Terrorism and Insurgency in the 21st Century. Mr. Gleis’s research at Columbia will focus on the Israeli withdrawals from Lebanon in 2000 and the Gaza Strip in 2005.
Nik Hynek is Research Fellow at the Institute of International Relations of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Lecturer at Charles University and Metropolitan University. He is currently PhD Candidate at the Department of Peace Studies of the University of Bradford, UK. Nikola holds M.A. in IR and Global Security (with distinction, Plymouth), MSc in Biology, Geography and Psychology (with distinction, Brno) and B.A. in Political Science, IR, and European Studies (Summa Cum Laude, Brno). Nik has been Visiting Research Fellow at the London School of Economics for 2007/2008 and is Visiting Research Scholar at the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies, Columbia University, for the academic year 2008/2009. He has largely researched on theories of IR, humanitarian arms-control and missile defense. His publications have appeared in Journal of International Relations and Development, International Journal, or Contemporary Political Theory. Nik is currently finalizing a co-edited book on Canadian foreign and security policy for Oxford University Press.
Hikaru Yamashita (Japan) is a Fulbright Scholar and Senior Fellow at the National Institute for Defense Studies in Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Yamashita received his Ph.D. in International Politics from University of Wales in Aberystwyth, United Kingdom, and his M.Sc. in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science, United Kingdom. Mr. Yamashita is the author of Humanitarian Space and International Politics: The Creation of Safe Areas (Ashgate, 2004), and his research at Columbia will focus on UN peacekeeping in the Post-Cold War era. Mitsuru Fukuda (Japan) is an Associate Professor of Journalism at the Nihon University College of Law in Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Fukuda received his Ph.D. and M.A. from the School of Humanities and Sociology at the University of Tokyo, Japan, and his research interests include security studies, risk management for counterterrorism, disaster management, and media studies. Mr. Fukuda’s research at Columbia will focus on security studies, intelligence, terrorism and counter-terrorism, media coverage of terrorism, and the balance between security and freedom.
