Club Sports Constitution

Figure Skating Club

Article I.  Name

            The official name of this club shall be the Columbia University Figure Skating Club (hereafter referred to as CUFSC).

 

Article II.  Purpose

CUFSC was founded to promote skating at Columbia so that skaters who come to Columbia will be encouraged to continue skating and to introduce other students to the rewards of figure skating.  The club aims to provide experiences for both beginning and advanced skaters through educational and competitive programs, and to foster an environment which makes it easier for skaters to continue skating while at Columbia.  The club will provide members of the University family with opportunities that would not otherwise exist on campus.

 

Article III.  Membership

            Section 1.  All individuals in the University community are eligible to be members of the CUFSC.  Members will not be discriminated against on the basis of ability, age, race, or sex. 

            Section 2.  In order to be recognized as a full member of CUFSC, the member must pay the yearly dues, which cover participation in Club Sports activities and membership in U.S. Figure Skating, the governing body of our sport.

            Section 3.  As a member of CUFSC and U.S. Figure Skating, the member is eligible to compete or test at U.S. Figure Skating – sponsored events, competitions, and test sessions.  The member will also receive a monthly issue of Skating Magazine. 

 

Article IV.  Meetings

            Section 1.  General membership meetings will be held at least one time each semester.

            Section 2.  There will be an annual meeting on or around the first week of April, at which point executive board elections shall be held.

 

Article V.  Executive Board

            Section 1.  There shall be a directory and officer for each discipline on the CUFSC executive board.

            Offices of the board are:
            President.  Duties include overseeing the events and ongoings of the club, allocating the budget, securing ice time for the skaters, and helping the board members to perform their tasks. 
            Vice President.  Duties include helping the president with overseeing the events of the club, heading up fundraising, and publicity.
            Club Sports Representative.  Duties include attending the club sports meetings and making sure that the club is up to date on the standards that it must meet.
            Fundraising Chair.  Duties are to oversee the fundraising of the club.      Treasurer.  Duties include overseeing the budget and taking care of all financial aspects.

            Section 2.  Vacancies within the board will be filled by nominations and then a vote of the executive board.

 

Article VI. Elections

Section 1.  Elections shall be held the first week in April.  New officers shall take office the third Monday in April.  The term for each elected member shall last one year.  There are no term limits.

Section 2.  Existing executive board will accept nominations starting the first week in March, and set up a ballot that will be voted on by all members of the club.

Section 3. Nominees will be able to present their qualifications at a general meeting during the first week of April, and the vote will take place following the nominees presentations.

Section 4. In case of a runoff, the two nominees with the same number of votes will be voted on exclusively by the rest of the club.

 

Article VII. Funds

            Request for funding must be made to the executive board two weeks before any scheduled event.  Funding requests will be considered in relation to participation in club events and involvement in fundraising activities.

 

Article IIX.  Affiliations

            Section 1. The Columbia University Figure Skating Club (CUFSC) is a registered club with US Figure Skating. All members must also have active memberships with US Figure Skating.

            Section 2.  CUFSC is in accordance with all rules set forth by US Figure Skating.

 

Article IX. Advisor

            The advisor to the club would have an active interest in figure skating and would help to coordinate the various efforts of the club.

 

Article X. Coach/Manager

            Any coaches wishing to teach lessons to club members must have their insurance information on file with the club.

 

Article XI. Ratification

            The constitution will be ratified by a majority vote of the membership.

 

Article XII. Amendments

            An amendment must be first presented to the executive board. If it is accepted by a vote of the majority of the board, it will then be presented by vote to the general membership.

 

Article XIII. Bylaws

            Section 1. Club Dues

                        All members will pay $50 a semester, and must have a club sports waiver on file in the club sports office. In addition, if they are not members of US Figure Skating, skaters must become members.

            Section 2. Elections

                        Elections for the 2005-2006 Board will take place earlier than April 8, 2005.
