CU Figure Skating Club Newsletter

Hi everyone!

First of all, I want to say thanks to everyone who came to the first meeting.  Also, if you are still interested in the club but couldn’t make it, awesome!  We are excited about the plans for the club this year.  One thing you may have noticed is that we never had a newsletter before.  I will occasionally be sending out such an e-mail to keep you guys up to date with what we have for you.  For today, I just wanted to refresh you about the ideas from the meeting and tell you about CUFSC membership.

In this issue:

  1. What CU figure skating is
  2. Club sports membership dues
  3. Ice time
  4. Practice support e-mail list
  5. US Figure Skating memberships
  6. Competitions
  7. Trial judging
  8. CUFSC clothing
  9. Events
  10. Other points of interest
  11. Join the board!

1. WHAT CU FIGURE SKATING IS

*We are here for you guys.  We want to promote the continuation of skating through the college years, and we also want to get non-skaters involved in the sport.  If there are any events or ideas that you would like for us to provide, please let us know*

Our plans for the year include helping with ice time, supporting skaters as they practice, providing a US Figure Skating membership, supporting CU competitors, encouraging and help prospective judges, providing CUFSC clothing, and attending events together.

2. CLUB SPORTS MEMBERSHIP DUES

CU Figure Skating is a club sport.  There is a Columbia rule that to be a member of a club sport you must pay a $75 membership fee.  Since we know that’s a lot to ask of members who don’t know how to skate yet, we will allow you to remain on our mailing list and join us for some events even if you aren’t a full member.  However, those of you who want to skate with us must pay the membership fee to Holly by October 4th.  But this year, there are so many cool perks that you’ll save money with it anyhow!

3. ICE TIME

We will hopefully be getting discounted ice packs from Chelsea Piers, which you will buy through the club.  For information about the Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers, visit http://www.chelseapiers.com/sr01.htm.  More information to come on these!

Additionally, we hope to get ice time just for the club at Wollman Rink in central park when it opens.  This will probably be a 1 hour ice session in the evenings, and seasoned skaters as well as first time skaters will be welcome.  Skate rentals would be available at Wollman for those who need them, and some of the club members will help newcomers learn how to skate.  This rink is beautiful at night!

4. PRACTICE SUPPORT

We will keep an email group of skaters who would like to know when others from the club are practicing at a rink nearby, so that we can go and skate together.  This list would be for people who already have some skating experience, as we will be going to freestyle sessions.  It will be informal; just shoot an email to the group whenever you are planning on going to the rink, and maybe you’ll get some company!  PLEASE EMAIL ME AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT TO BE ON THIS LIST.

5. US FIGURE SKATING MEMBERSHIP
Once you pay your CUFSC membership fee, the club will provide you with 1-year US Figure Skating membership, if you choose for us to be your home club.  This will include the SKATING magazine subscription.

6. COMPETITIONS

Some of you are interested in competing for Columbia!  That’s great!  For information about the US Figure Skating Intercollegiate Program, check out http://www.usfsa.org/Programs.asp?id=89.  CUFSC will probably pay your entrance fee and will help with transportation and organization of club participation in events.  There are usually 3-4 of these events throughout the school year.  More information to come.

7. TRIAL JUDGING

There will be a program this year to encourage and the development of judges.  Old and new skaters alike are welcome to take part in this.  We will have a meeting soon to get those who are interested started in this, and members of the club will be welcome to come out to trial judge at test sessions in New Jersey throughout the year.

8. CLOTHING

There will be team clothing!  With names, and a logo!  This will be discounted or covered by the club, and available to anyone who was paid the club sports fee.

9. EVENTS

We may go as a group to skating events in the area.  If you know of any events you’d like to attend, please let us know!

10.  OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST:

-U.S. Collegiate Championships

In the past CUFSC has had members compete in these championships.  The 2005 event will be held in Hawaii!  Find out information about this competition at US Figure Skating’s website.

-Synchronized skating

CUFSC and NYC Intercollegiate Synchronized Skating Team are separate.  Many of our skaters skate on the team and skaters from the team join our club events.  If you have any questions about synchro, e-mail Laura (lbk231@NYU.edu), Mariel (ml2190@barnard.edu), or Bethany (bb2121@columbia.edu).

11.  JOIN THE BOARD!

We are looking for help in many areas.  The board currently consists of Holly Hester, President, Elle Yan, Vice President, and Davida Schiff, Club Sports Representative.  We are specifically looking for help in the areas of fundraising chair, competition chair, and treasurer.  You are also welcome to be a general board member or just help us in whatever way you can.  E-MAIL ME IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HELPING!  (I will be contacting those of you who already expressed interest shortly).

Happy Skating,

Holly Hester
